n8n Course: How to Learn n8n Step by Step

A practical learning path for n8n, from your first workflow to AI agents and self-hosting, with exercises at each stage.

n8n is a workflow automation platform where each step is a node on a canvas. You can learn the basics in a day and become productive in a few weeks. This path shows what to learn in order and what to build to practise. Use n8n's official documentation and community resources alongside it, and check that any paid course is current, because the product changes often. We are not an n8n course provider; we do offer team workshops on request.

Learning path

Step 1. 1. Basics

Triggers, nodes, connections, credentials and running a workflow manually. Build: send yourself an email when a form is submitted.

Step 2. 2. Data

JSON, items, expressions and the data from each node. Build: reshape data from a form and save it to a spreadsheet.

Step 3. 3. Logic

IF and switch nodes, merging branches, loops and splitting items. Build: route leads by country to different owners.

Step 4. 4. APIs and webhooks

HTTP Request node, authentication, webhooks and rate limits. Build: connect a service that has no built-in node.

Step 5. 5. Error handling

Error workflows, retries, alerts and logging. Build: a workflow that alerts you in chat when anything fails.

Step 6. 6. AI nodes and agents

Calling language models, extracting data from text, agents with tools and memory. Build: an email triage workflow with human approval.

Step 7. 7. Production

Self-hosting, backups, environments, security and upgrades. Build: a deployment you could trust with a client.

Practice projects

  • New lead to CRM with an instant reply.
  • Invoice email to accounting entry with review.
  • Weekly report compiled from several tools.
  • Appointment reminders by message.
  • A knowledge assistant that answers from your documents.

See worked examples in n8n examples, and compare options in n8n vs Zapier.

Mistakes beginners make

  • Building one giant workflow instead of small reusable ones.
  • No error handling, so failures go unnoticed.
  • Putting secrets inside nodes instead of credentials.
  • Skipping testing with realistic data.
  • Self-hosting without backups.

How to practise safely

  • Use a test account or sample data, never live customer data, while learning.
  • Run workflows manually first and inspect the data at every node.
  • Keep each practice project in its own workflow and name it clearly.
  • Export workflows regularly so you can restore them.

When to bring in help

If workflows start to touch customer data, money or production systems, a review by someone experienced saves expensive mistakes. That is when an n8n consultant or a short workshop for your team is worth it.
